My favourite songs from the year I turned 16

1990 was the year I turned 16. Had I been born a couple months later, I could have added “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to this list. Had I been born a bit earlier, I could have included “Fools Gold”. But I’m happy with my 1990 selection.

So many great songs were released, all ready to inspire a young lass just starting to find her indie and alternative way.

The music of 1990 started me on my journey away from pure pop toward indie and electronic music. I discovered that the alternative charts were a better source of music than the standard top 40 and that “house” was more than a building where I lived with my annoying parents and siblings.

Like no others, the songs of our youth claw their way into our brains and settle permanently in our neural pathways. With just a few beats, I can identify the songs from my younger years and be transported back to some special moment.

And so, here are 16 of my favourite songs from the year I turned 16 (1990) listed in order of release.
