The bemusing musings of my teenage self
From ages 12 to 22, I faithfully kept a diary. As soon as my life got remotely interesting, I ditched it and haven’t bothered since. Everything in italics is transcribed from my 1990 diary. Names have been changed to protect the innocent, but nothing else has been altered. I actually wrote these actual words.
Monday 1 January 1990
My New Year’s Resolutions:
1. To be thin
2. To be beautiful
3. Talk nicely
4. Be nice
Numbers 1, 2 and 4 — Why, society, why? Please, never again let this be all you let young girls aspire to. As for number 3, I was in love with classic literature and spent about a year trying to sound like I was a character in a Jane Austen novel rather than a suburban Australian schoolgirl.
Wednesday 4 January 1990
All my New Year’s Resolutions are broken. Jeremy and I saw “Parenthood” tonight. It was good. 7 ½ out of 10.
Jeremy was my 12-year-old cousin. I did not go to movies with actual boys. Incidentally, only a couple of weeks ago that I found out that Joaquin Phoenix…
