I’m celebrating by exploring a few of the assumptions Mary might have made

Today (15 August) is a public holiday here in Barcelona. It’s Assumption Day, aka Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, or the Feast of the Assumption.

I don’t know much about Catholic things. But I do know a lot about assumptions. Sometimes I make them.

Ergo, I’ve decided to celebrate Assumption Day with some good ole assumptions that a woman named Mary may have made.

  • Mary assumed when she had children her partner would perform 50% of the parenting and never refer to parenting as “babysitting” or take the kids to his mother’s when he was supposed to be taking care of them.
  • Mary assumed hateful people with orange skin and bad ideas would never get elected as the leader of a world superpower.
  • Mary assumed decent public healthcare would be available for all.
  • Mary assumed everyone shared her love of yacht rock.
  • Mary assumed a small, mongrel island would prefer to remain in a union with a larger continent that had better food and weather.
  • Mary assumed everyone agreed that dogs were better than cats.
