Fifteen years ago, while on holiday, I read David Nicholls’ at-the-time new novel, One Day. Then I read it again. Normally I steer clear of romance but there was something so sweet and authentic about this book. I absolutely loved it. Besides, I don’t really consider One Day romance but more the tale of two lifelong friends, Emma and Dexter.

If you’re not familiar with the book/series, One Day is about two friends who meet on the day of their university graduation — 15 July 1988. We catch up with the pair on the same day every year for the next 20 years.

Netflix’s 14-episode adaption of One Day absolutely did justice to the book, unlike the 2011 film version starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. I finished binge-watching the One Day series half a week ago and it’s still with me.

It’s been years since a film or TV show left me thinking about it days later. I reckon that’s because the story was so beautifully crafted and relatable. Emma and Dexter were totally believable I felt like they were friends of mine.

One Day is a Generation X love story. And in a way, it’s a love story to Generation X.
