Their bad mood puts me in a bad mood

Online groups and forums are fantastic places to exchange information about a shared interest. You can learn, make friends and, in general, have a jolly good time. But, alas, there’s a dark and snarky shadow looming over many groups and forums, even those dedicated to the most innocuous of topics.

All too often these groups are dominated by a clique of snarky folk who steal the joy from any interaction the rest of us might experience.

I’ve participated in some lovely groups and forums, where I learned a lot of great stuff. But in the end, I felt compelled to leave some of them because they became over-represented with snark.

Snarky experiences

Once I joined an online writing group because I (naively) thought it would be a good place to discuss writing with like-minded people. But no, writing was far from the thoughts of the far-woke crowd who brought identity politics into every single post and persecuted those who didn’t.

Anyway, I left and followed some members who’d been driven away for daring to disagree with the snarky in-crowd. Together we found some nicer writers groups where we discussed (shock!) writing.
