Songs From Places I’ve Called Home
The “songs from when I’m from” writing challenge
So far, I’ve lived in four cities. A part of each of those cities has shaped the person who I am today — the people, the weather, the urban environment, the local culture and, of course, the music.
This music writing challenge came from Katemiya and it’s a topic I’m excited to write about.
Without further ado, here is the “musical travelogue of my life” … so far.
Leeds, England
Gang of Four — Damaged Goods
I was born in Leeds, England to a Yorkshire lass and a Melbourne man. Always reminiscent of my mum, the Yorkshire accent has been a source of comfort and amusement to me since I can remember.
Leeds was the home of the inventor of carbonated water. So we have Leeds to thank for every fizzy drink, ever.
Gang of Four are a post-punk band from Leeds that formed in the mid-70s, shortly after I was born. Named after a Maoist political faction in China, Gang of Four are one of the leading post-punk bands. Rolling Stone magazine ranked their debut album Entertainment! (on which “Damaged Goods” is the debut single) as the fifth-greatest punk album ever.
