In 1982, American songwriters Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley penned a weepy ballad by the name of “Wind Beneath My Wings”.

When Pierce McIntyre asked, “What Songs, Movies, & TV Shows Make You Cry?”, I wanted to come up with a dark, brooding and ultra-cool playlist. But, whenever I thought about it, only one song popped into my head — “Wind Beneath My Wings”.

In 2002, “Wind Beneath My Wings” was apparently the most-played song at British funerals. Even in 2019 it ranked in the top 10 funeral songs. You can bet there wasn’t a dry eye in the funeral parlour whenever they play that song.

“Wind Beneath My Wings” is Bette Midler’s signature song. I’m sure whenever you hear the song, you think of Bette and the 1988 hit movie, Beaches.

But did you ever know that “Wind Beneath My Wings” was originally recorded by none other than Australia’s very own crooner, Kamahl?

Writing the song

“Wind Beneath My Wings” is one of the greatest tearjerker songs of all time. Initially conceived as a love song, it became something more universal — a tribute to all kinds of human relationships. Henley thought up the title, and Silbar loved it, especially since he was learning to fly planes at the time…
