I always thought I was broken into three pieces — English, Australian and European. But the other day, I heard a song, “I Am European”, that showed me that being divided makes you whole, not broken.

Despite Brexit, despite the tyranny of distance of Australia, despite being forced to return to that faraway antipodean land for boring reasons. Despite all that, I’m still European.

In “I Am European”, Gavin Osborn sings (and I paraphrase) that he’s international, he’s English, he’s British and he’s European.

I don’t know if it’s Osborn’s sweetly nostalgic folk singing, or his painfully-identifiable lyrics (probably both) but listening to the song “I Am European” made me cry.
