One of my favourite documentaries is the Seven Up! series in which 14 British children were interviewed at seven-year intervals. Those kids are now in their 60s and I’m not a whole lot behind. So I thought it was time to interview myself at seven-year intervals, but I’d just focus on music.

I was born at the end of 1974. I don’t remember any of the music that was playing when I popped out of my mother, although I’m sure some of it would have sunk into my noggin. I’ve already written about the music from my birth year, anyway.

Seven (1982)

Dad’s taken up the guitar and he’s really into his old-time blues. Mississippi John Hurt, Reverend Gary Davis and several other blind old fellows. Dad practices over and over until he gets the complicated melodies right.

I don’t really like Dad’s music. It sounds to me like a bunch of old men grunting.
